Weekly Wag: Easy Homemade Chicken Bone Broth

Here is an inexpensive way to add flavor and supplement nutrition to your pet’s kibbles and feed your family. I use this for my dogs and cats. Very easy to make and store. Broth can be frozen for future use. Bone broth is high in minerals, collagen and other micro nutrients, all easily absorbed by the body. Raw or cooked bones can be used for broth. DO NOT GIVE PETS THE BONES

Items Needed : whole chicken, crock pot, spices, non-stick spray and containers if you want to freeze broth. Optional: Vegetables, shiitake mushrooms, kelp, nettles, garlic, sage, rosemary, thyme, oregano, basil, fennel seed and raw apple cider vinegar.  Time: 7 hours Note: Garlic is safe to give dogs in moderation. (dogs can safely consume 1/8 teaspoon of garlic powder per pound of food 3 to 4 times a week. Dogs: 10 to 15 pounds – half a clove, 20 to 40 pounds – 1 clove, 45 to 70 pounds – 2 cloves, 75 to 90 pounds – 2 and a half cloves, 100 pounds and over – 3 cloves)

Directions:

Rinse whole chicken, remove innards, and place in sprayed crock pot. Sprinkle with spices (keep in mind spices that pets tolerate). You don’t need any liquid in the pot. Set crock pot on low, cover and cook for 7 hours.

Remove all the meat from the bones. Completely cover bones with water in crock pot and cover. I put the skin back in as well, since I don’t eat skin. Raw apple cider vinegar(2-4 TBSP), spices and shiitake mushrooms may be added.  Include joint bones with cartilage. (raw bones may be used or you can collect bones from your meals and freeze, rinse off any sauce) Turkey wings and legs are a good choice and can usually be requested at health food store meat counters at a good price.

There is not a set time to cook, but I recommend simmering bones for 24 hours. Strain mushrooms and bones from broth. Once broth is chilled in refrigerator skim the excess fat off the top. Makes about 50 oz. of broth from one chicken. It should have a jelly like consistency when cold. Can be stored in refrigerator for 4 days. You can use any container to freeze, even yogurt containers.

Weekly Wag: Fostering Rewards

I started fostering about a year ago. I had mixed feelings of getting too attached to the dog yet knowing in the end the dog would have a loving forever home. As it turns out I did end up fostering my love bug for almost a year, you can imagine my attachment. Duke has been in his new home for almost two weeks now. I have an open door policy that he can come back if it does not work out with the new family. He is in a loving home with other pets and children.

I knew that Duke would not be with me always and at some point would go to a new home. Although I miss him terribly I know this is best for him and his happiness comes first. I kept the mind-set that everything I did for him was to be with his new family. I socialized him, taught him not to be food or toy possessive, played with him, taught him a few basic commands such as sit, stay, down, and leave it. I have cats also which is a great plus when fostering. The more the dog is accustomed to the more adoptable the pet will be.

I just got another foster yesterday, a 6 month old female black lab mix, Vivian. She is so timid, but that will all change. I don’t know how long Vivian will be with me. I do know that fostering is very rewarding and getting another foster takes away missing the last dog a little. I plan on visiting my first foster when I can, after her gets accustomed to his new family.

I would recommend fostering for anyone that is able to. The rescue usually provides everything the dog needs, such as food, crate, leash and any vet service required. And usually has a trainer for any behavioral problems. These poor dogs need love to be more adoptable. When you search for your family pet, you do not want to see a scared skittish dog. Most of these rescue dogs have a traumatic past and need lots of love and patience.

I do have an interact before I take on a foster to make sure it is a fit for my pack. You don’t ever want to compromise the pets that are already in your home. I happen to have a 10-year-old golden retriever that is excellent with other dogs. She is motherly, friendly and patient. So now I get the shy timid dogs to bring them out of their shell and be social. The bottom line is fostering is a very rewarding experience and I would recommend homing these poor dogs instead of being cooped up in a shelter or cage until they get adopted. Rescue dogs need lots of love and socialization.

Valentine’s Rescue Story

Valentine today      3/15/12

The story of how she was abused and tortured.

Valentine is only about 10 months old. The vet said her other front paw is also broken but she walked in on it looking for someone to help her and her skull has been crushed with a large rock too.  Teeth have also been knocked out.  Injuries happened about 2 days ago and she showed up with electric tape wrapped around her muzzle.  The only thing in her tummy was dirt and rocks that she ate before someone taped her mouth shut and hit her over the head and eye with and large rock and then dragged her behind a car by a thin nylon rope around her paw until it was almost cut off.  We 1st thought she was used as a bait dog for a dog fighting ring but there were no bite marks on her so all her injuries were done by Mankind!  Even with all her injuries she has never even once shown any signs of aggression and has even wagged her tail when she knew we were there to help her. She only weighs 33 lbs and that is with rocks and dirt in her tummy. Even with this shocking abuse she has lived in the hands of a human, she still loves mankind! We just can’t let her down now! Cases like this has to be where the phrase “Be the kind of person your dog thinks you are” came from.

If anyone  would like to donate towards her vet bill, they can either go to this web site and Pay Pal a donation: www.soundsofsilentspirits.petfinder.org  or make a donation by calling the vet office which is:  The Bear Valley Animal Hospital at (760)240-5228  I don’t know how to do the fund raiser thing on facebook yet or much else on  it yet either so if anyone else could do that for Valentine it would be so helpful!

Sounds of Silent Spirits Rescue wishes to thank all of the people who have already made donations to support the rescue and rehabilitation of Valentine, a pit bull who was horribly tortured. When we find an animal bound in tape, one paw severed, covered in road rash, it shakes your faith in humanity. But the support that has already come in for this dog is overwhelming.

UPDATE:

Valentine is doing wonderful and loves being the center of everyone’s attention everywhere she goes. Of course she is quite humble by her adoring friends. She will be with us at the Paws and Claws Pet Fair at Community Park in Apple Valley, CA next Saturday Sept. 8th, 10am-3pm.
