“The purpose of this pit bull campaign is to help everyone see what loving companions pit bulls can make when given the right training, care and environment. We hope to also reinforce the bond between pit bulls and their owners, while promoting pit bull adoptions.” - Dr. Gary Weitzman, President and CEO San Diego Humane Society

Weekly Wag: Pick Your Price During Kitten Season
Pick Your Purrfect Price!
Adopters can name the adoption fee for any cat or kitten at one of the participating animal shelters now through Friday, August 31st!
We’re in the midst of Kitten Season, which means there are hundreds of cats and kittens in San Diego that need loving homes.
To find homes for the rising number of cats in our care, and to bring awareness to the issue of pet overpopulation, the San Diego Humane Society, the San Diego County Department of Animal Services and the Rancho Coastal Humane Society are offering a “Pick Your Purr-fect Price” promotion.
YOU can name the adoption fee for any cat or kitten!
We rescued Baby Rey last year in memory of my friend, Aida Reyes (5/9/11). Aida humanely caught feral (wild) cats to be spayed or neutered through the Feral Cat Coalition in San Diego, CA. Aida was very ill from cancer and one cat was not caught and had a litter. Aida left this earth when Rey was 8 weeks old. Rey is by my side now as I write as is she is most of the time.
As you can see I grew up with dogs, I have a golden and shih tzu sibling. Duke was my foster brother, he has a furever home now. I believe I am a dog, when mom calls the dogs for treats, I am right there in line. I would like you to help my feline friends and tell you how important it is to spay or neuter your cat. Please see if you have a feral cat program in your neighborhood! My four brothers and sisters all have homes, but many are not so lucky. -Rey (AKA Baby Rey, Aida Reyes)

Man Charged for Beating His 4 Year Old Pit Bull
San Diego resident, Saman Afrouzina, was sentenced today for one count of 597(a) P.C. felony animal abuse for beating his dog, Sasha, a 4-year old Pit Bull Terrier. The San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Officers seized Sasha when a Good Samaritan turned in a video of Afrouzina punching Sasha and lifting her by the ears.
Afrouzina was sentenced to three years probation; he will have to take classes on animal abuse, cannot own an animal for three years and he will have to pay full restitution to the San Diego Humane Society for Sasha’s medical expenses. A hearing will be held in two weeks to determine the restitution amount.
“Often times we rely on the community to help us by reporting suspected abuse or neglect, and this is an instance where a Good Samaritan captured this video footage and called us,” said Randy Lawrence, Director of Humane Law Enforcement for the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA. “The video was the crucial piece of evidence that led to bringing Afrouzina to justice.”
Upon arriving at the San Diego Humane Society, Sasha was fearful of touch to her ears – a result of the maltreatment that she endured. The San Diego Humane Society’s Behavior & Training team worked with her daily following behavior modification protocol. Today, Sasha has overcome her fears and she is a sweet, loving dog and is currently available for adoption at the San Diego Humane Society’s Central Campus, located at 5500 Gaines Street.
Animal-related concerns can be submitted on the San Diego Humane Society’s website, www.sdhumane.org or by calling (619) 243-3466.
Please report animal abuse to your local humane organization or animal control agency. Click here for more information on animal cruelty.

My Furry Valentine
Happy Valentine’s Day
OK San Diegans, ready for unconditional love for Valentine’s Day? The San Diego Humane Society has a deal for you, from now until February 14th all adoption fees are just $14. See all the Valentines here. Shelter pets are spayed/neutered and up to date on shots. They have bunnies, too.
Please be responsible pet owners and make sure you have the time and resources to take care of a pet. Some things you want to consider is how big will the pet get, will the pet fit into your lifestyle (active or couch potato). The grooming a pet would require. If you have pets at home, will the new addition be welcome.
Many people get a new puppy or kitten because they are adorable and don’t take into consideration the work, time or expense involved. Help keep the homeless population down by being a responsible pet owner and realize this is a lifetime commitment and not just till the pet grows up or ends up being more than you bargained for. Ask questions, get to know the breed and what is involved.
Shelter pets are great loving loyal pets that love you unconditionally. I find it very impressive that usually no matter what a pet has been through they will love a human as if they have been treated like a king or queen all their life!
