I became seriously interested in Reiki in June 2010. I became attuned on October 9, 2010 and became certified on May 20th, 2011. I continue to go to Reiki shares and classes and practice daily on my pets. Finding the right teacher FOR YOU should be a journey as is learning and practicing Reiki. I originally got involved in Reiki to heal animals. Reiki has opened so many doors for me that I never expected and an incredible spiritual journey as well!
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words-Rei which means Spiritual or Sacred and Ki which means energy. So Reiki means “spiritual energy”.
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction, relaxation, and healing from a Divine Source founded by Dr. Mikao Usui. “Internal life force energy” flows through us and “external life force energy” flows through trees, flowers, etc. Energy surrounds us every moment of every day. We all use it, and most of us are unaware of it.
Reiki can be used on humans, animals, and plants. You can give yourself Reiki treatments. It may also be used to cleanse and clear crystals, to enhance the effedtiveness of medications, enhace the nutrition of foods and beverages, and for much, much more!
Reiki is not a religion. It is spiritual in nature. There is nothing you must believe in or have studied to learn and use Reiki.
Reiki lets you be yourself without changing your views, beliefs, culture, or traditions!
Reiki does not replace traditional medicine, but often works very well in combination.
Reiki energy never harms. There is no danger in the use of Reiki, it is a positive force of energy that increases the vitality of life.
You are not doing the actual healing. You are the tuned instrument or vessel that the energy travels through. The healing energy comes from a Divine Source (whatever your belief that Divine Source is). Again Reiki is not a religion and works with whatever your belief system is!
Reiki is usually taught as Level 1,2, and 3 A and B in the West. Traditional Japanese Reiki is Shoden, Okuden, Shinpiden, and Shihan. An attunement or Reiju is given in Level 1 (Shoden) to become attuned to the energy, tuning the energy to a vibrational level by a Reiki Master Teacher. It is like tuning a muscial instrument with a tuning fork.
How Does Reiki Work
A Reiki practioner places hands on (or over) a client’s body in a variety of hand postiions to direct Reiki energy into the client’s Chakras, or an area of the body that needs the energy. The client may feel anything from a pleasant tingling sensation to a variation of heat, warmth or even coolness may occur. Relaxation follows.
The origin of Reiki may tend to differ a little depending on the source. (I follow traditional Japanese Reiki as much as possible). Reiki was founded by a Buddhist Monk, Mikao Usui, in the 1920’s in Japan. Usui was in search of the answer to “What is the true purpose of life?” After a great deal of profound thought and studies of history, medicine, Buddhism, Christianity, and several others; he came to the conclusion the ultimate purpose of life is to attain a state of complete peace of mind or complete stillness.
This led him to Zen Buddhism. For three years Usui could not achieve enlightenment. He asked his Zen Master how to attain his goal. His Master replied, “Well, maybe you should experience death.”
In March 1922, Usui went on a retreat to Mt. Kurama, a sacred mountain in Kyoto. He began to fast as a preparation for death. At midnight during his third week, he felt a powerful shock in the center of his brain, as if he had been struck by lightning. He lost consciousness. Several hours later he woke to dawn breaking. To his surprise he was feeling refreshed in a way he never felt before. Divine Reiki energy penetrated his body and soul. As the cosmic energy and his own energy resonated together he came to realize, “The universe is me–Iam the universe.” He had finally achieved the enlightenment he had searched for.
At his discovery he ran down the mountain, and tripped over a rock, which ripped off his toenail. He laid his hand on the toe and to his surprise the pain disappeared, the bleeding stopped and the toe had healed. He rushed back to the Zen temple to see his Master. The Zen Master confirmed that Usui had achieved enlightenment and he also guided him to use his ability to heal people and to lead them to enlightenment through the healing.
