Michael Vick is now the owner of a family dog and says he wants a pet to teach his child respect for animals.Vick served 18 months (photo states 21 months) in federal prison on dog fighting charges and was banned from dog ownership until he had completed his probationary period. Vick did not fight dogs for money, he did it for the pure sport of watching them hurt and kill each other!
Vick, who was released from prison nearly four years ago, partnered with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to become their ambassador to further the organization’s mission to end acts of barbarism against animals.
The Humane Society declined to comment, but the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals issued a statement Friday saying that Vick should express empathy and remorse for the dogs that he killed, something the group says he hasn’t done publicly.
I am shocked to see that polls asking if Vick should own a dog are overwhelmingly saying YES. I do not understand this. I don’t know who would sell this man a dog in the first place. I volunteer for a pit rescue and involved with several other dog rescues. The rescues would never adopt out a dog of any kind to a person with this kind of animal abuse background!
“I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family’s decision to care for a pet,” said Vick. “As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals. I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family.”-Michael Vick
