Puppies Behind Bars trains prison inmates to raise service dogs for wounded war veterans and explosive detection canines for law enforcement. The puppies live in prison with their raisers from eight weeks of age to twenty-four months. As the puppies mature into well-loved, well-behaved dogs, their raisers learn what it means to contribute to society rather than take from it. www.puppiesbehindbars.com
Two years ago Puppies Behind Bars asked Anderson Cooper if he would host a graduation of wounded war vets with their service dogs. Without hesitation, he said, “Yes!” and the night was a huge success.
How do you thank you thank a celebrity for giving up his Sunday night to help a non-profit organization and their clientele? By naming a puppy after him, that’s how!
The puppy, Anderson, entered the Fishkill men’s prison in December 2011. On October 20th, he and other dogs from our program will graduate with their human partners.
Dog Tags: Service Dogs for Those Who’ve Served Us was initiated by Puppies Behind Bars in 2006 to provide prison-trained service dogs, free of charge, to veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The dogs learn special skills to mitigate the effects of PTSD and traumatic brain injury. To date, 59 veterans have been paired with life-changing canine companions through Dog Tags.
